What Are Dental Bridges?

dental bridge in Ellensburg

A dental bridge consists of two dental crowns that are placed on the remaining teeth on either side of the gap in your smile, with one or more crowns known as pontics in the middle. More often than not, these restorations are made of dental ceramic with a backbone of zirconium. This combination of materials will make your bridge so realistic that it will be hard for anyone to tell which tooth has been replaced.

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Dental Bridge?

If you’re missing teeth in Ellensburg, a dental bridge might be the right treatment for you. Bridges can be utilized to replace one or even several consecutive missing teeth. Before receiving a dental bridge, however, it’s important that your mouth is free from infections like tooth decay and gum disease. Once those problems have been dealt with, we can move forward with the process of acquiring a bridge.

The Bridge Process

After your initial consultation, expect to schedule two further appointments to get your bridge. At the first visit, your teeth that will receive the crowns, called abutment teeth, are prepared, usually by filing down their enamel ever so slightly. Then, we’ll take impressions of your prepped teeth. These impressions will serve as a model for the ceramists at the dental lab to craft your bridge. While your restoration is being made, we’ll fit you with a temporary bridge to protect your exposed teeth and gums and let you get used to the way your new teeth will feel. Simply return to our Ellensburg office in a few weeks when your permanent bridge is ready. We’ll make any adjustments as needed and cement your bridge into place.
