At Pearl Care Dental, we strive to help our patients retain their natural teeth for a lifetime. That’s why we use various restorative methods to fortify and repair teeth that have suffered damage. One such restorative method is dental crowns in Ellensburg. This page explains what crowns are, the process for creating dental crowns, who is a candidate for a crown, and the benefits that crowns can deliver.
A dental crown is a custom-designed, tooth-shaped cap or cover that gets placed over the entire visible portion of a tooth — everything about the gum line. In most cases, a crown’s purpose is to restore the form, function, and strength of a damaged tooth. Crowns might also be used for purely aesthetic reasons or to replace a tooth altogether (when they are part of a bridge or used with a dental implant).
Historically, gold or other metals were the preferred materials for crowns. Today, however, many dentists, including the ones at Pearl Care Dental, tend to favor porcelain. Porcelain bears a strong resemblance to natural tooth enamel and is durable enough to stand the test of time.
You may benefit from a dental crown if:
When you visit us, we will evaluate your tooth and explain your treatment options. If a crown is the best way to get your oral health back on track, we will begin the crown process.
In most cases, the process of designing and placing a crown requires at least two dental appointments. At your first appointment, we will prepare your tooth by filing it down or filling it in; this step is necessary to ensure that your crown will fit in well with your bite. Once your tooth is ready, we will take a digital impression of your teeth, which will serve as the basis for designing your crown. You will wear a temporary crown while a laboratory fabricates your permanent one.
After the laboratory sends your permanent crown to us, you will come back for your second appointment. Once we verify that the restoration is a perfect fit for your tooth, we will cement it in place.
