How to Handle Common Dental Emergencies

Whether you’re experiencing a severe toothache or just knocked-out a precious pearly white, the first step you should take to minimize damage is to seek professional care as soon as possible. Here are a few precautionary measures you can take until you get to our dental office to avoid additional oral damage.

Toothaches

To make sure that lodged food isn’t causing you tooth pain in Ellensburg, rinse your mouth with a lukewarm saltwater solution and gently floss around the tooth that’s causing you discomfort. If your pain doesn’t subside, contact our dental office immediately. You can take an over-the-counter pain medication such as ibuprofen to ease your discomfort, and place a cold compress on the outside of your cheek to help with any swelling.

Chipped/Broken Tooth

Gently rinse your mouth with warm saltwater and try to locate as many pieces of your damaged tooth as you can, so you can bring them to your appointment with you. If your tooth has a sharp edge that’s irritating your oral tissue, you can cover it with a piece of sugar-free gum or dental wax.

Knocked-Out Tooth

Locate your knocked-out tooth and pick it up by the biting surface, being sure to not touch the root. If it’s dirty, rinse it under water. To keep the root alive, try to place it back in its original socket. If you’re not able to, you can also place it in a small container of milk or saltwater. In this type of dental emergency, time is of the essence, so be sure to get to our dental office within the hour.

Lost Filling/Crown

While damaged restorations aren’t the most urgent of dental emergencies, it’s still important to address them in a timely manner. Without the proper protection, your tooth could develop additional decay or damage, causing more severe problems such as tooth infections. If your restoration is still intact, you can rinse it off and try to place it back on your tooth using dental cement from your local pharmacy or a small amount of toothpaste.
