Diagnosis & Treatment

Digital x-rays of skull and jawbone

TMD can be brought on by a misalignment between the jaw joints and the teeth, arthritis, or an injury to the jaw joint itself. When you come to see us showing the signs of TMD, we’ll use a variety of tools and techniques to determine the root cause of your problem. From there, our team will formulate a treatment plan and tell you about different options that will help take away your pain and restore your normal jaw function in no time.

Tekscan Equilibration/Occlusal Adjustments

Tekscan diagnostic system

Sometimes, a misalignment in the teeth or the jaw joint can prevent the teeth from closing properly, putting uneven pressure on the teeth and causing tension in the jaw muscles. With our Tekscan technology, we can create a digital image of your bite that will quickly reveal this misalignment. Using it as a guide, your dentist can gently reshape your teeth so they come together smoothly and pain-free. From there, you should feel complete relief of your TMD symptoms.

Occlusal Splints

Clear occlusal splint

An occlusal splint in a type of mouthguard we can use to slightly adjust the alignment of your jaw joints in order to address the problems related to TMD. It will be custom-made to fit your teeth so that it is always comfortable, and you’ll only need to wear it when you go to bed. It will put your jaw in a more natural position so the tense, aching muscles in your face can relax and heal. After a few months, your jaw may be able to find this new position on its own without the splint, but some patients may need to continue wearing it in order to avoid symptoms.

NTI-tss Nightguard

Clear plastic NTI-tss nightguard

The solution to your problem may be the NTI-tss (Nociceptive Trigeminal Inhibition Tension Suppression System), a small plastic dental device that you wear at night to prevent the grinding and clenching of your teeth. Invented by a dentist who suffered from migraines, the NTI-tss device is the only non-drug, non-surgical method of migraine prevention approved by the FDA.

We will custom fit the NTI-tss device to slip snugly over your front teeth. Don’t worry—it’s too secure to fall out. The device prevents contact between your back teeth as you sleep. Because you can’t grind or clench your teeth, you won’t awaken with that tense feeling in your jaw and facial muscles.

You’re likely to get fewer migraines, too. Eighty-two percent of NTI-tss device users report a significant reduction in their headaches.

If migraine headaches upset your work and personal plans, call our Ellensburg dental office and ask about the NTI-tss device.

Kois Device

In order to treat your TMD, we first need to determine what the proper alignment of your jaw is. This is different for each person and can be influenced by factors such as the teeth, jaw size, and orientation of the muscles. To find your ideal position, we will use something called a Kois Device, and no, it won’t involve any fish!
